Page Setup in Pages for use in iWeb

You can use iWork's Pages to create a webpage.
Well, not  the webpage itself, but the design with the objects you later will copy/paste to iWeb.
To make the page in Pages at least the same width as the page in iWeb, proceed as follows :
— Determine the width and height in pixels of your iWeb page.
— Divide by 72 to get the width and height in inches,
— To get centimeters, multiply the number in inches by 2,54.
— Create a custom page size in Page setup in Pages.
— Use the numbers in inches or in centimeters.
— Add a blank page in Pages.
— Choose the newly created pagesize.
— Set the zooming of Pages to 100%.
— You now have a identical page size.
Webpages expand downwards. So make the page as long as you think it will be.

Here's the custom page I use for the Made for iPad webpages :

Then in the page setup or the print dialogue window you choose the pagesize you want :

Bekijk Fast FTP Client

Files missing after downloading from MobileMe

See my blog about transfering my website from MobileMe to One.com.

Succesfully migrated from MobileMe to One.com »

After all was well and done, I did some checking and saw that a lot of files were missing on the new server.

I checked the folder on the desktop and discovered that there were a lot of empty folders that should have content.

One folder had some 2600 files and folders on the MobileMe server but only some 2300 on the desktop.

Whole iWeb sites were missing.

After comparing the files on the One.com server I uploaded the missing ones. As far as I could determine, nothing is missing now.

I suspect Cyberduck choked a bit when it downloaded the files from MobileMe. I would too with some 2GB and thousands of files.

So if you're moving from MobileMe either check/verify what you have downloaded with Cyberduck or mount your iDisk on the Desktop and copy everything from there to your computer.

Mocha Telnet Lite

Download a file

If you have a file you want to download immediately when a visitor clicks the link instead of opening the file in a browserwindow, you can add instructions to an .htaccess file on the server.

For this demo I use a pdf file, an Excel file, and a Postscript file added to an iWeb page.

On the server, open or create an .htaccess file and add these lines  :

<Files *.xls>
  Header set Content-Disposition attachment
</Files>
<Files *.eps>
  Header set Content-Disposition attachment
</Files>
<Files *.pdf>
  Header set Content-Disposition attachment
</Files>

Besides the pdf, it also instructs the server, and the browser, to download Excel and Postscript files.

The * before the dot (.) includes all filenames.

Avoiding the iWeb Sitename in the URL

Read this first :

    The concept of iWeb Sites

And then this :

    Avoiding the iWeb Sitename in the URL

It works with every webhost I use. Here's another example :

    http://wyodor.byethost8.com/htdocs

Following the instructions by the webhoster, htdocs is the folder where webpages should be published. In iWeb it should be used as the pathname.

I named the iWeb site htdocs and published the site OUTSIDE the htdocs folder on the server by leaving the pathname empty. Against the instructions as can clearly be seen on the image.

iWeb doesn't care, but expects the URL to be :

    http://wyodor.byethost8.com/htdocs

It uses this URL to create the subscription and RSS feed links.

By using an .htaccess file with the right directives I avoid the sitename in the URL, keep iWeb happily ignorant about it, and still make it work.

And here's a solution to solve the conflict between the index.html file other applications create and the one iWeb creates outside the folder with the Sitename.

In Sandvox for example, open the project that's default on the server, i.e. The page that loads first.

Then click the Homepage and choose index.php from the popup menu at the bottom of the window :

To make sure that this page opens, you have to test what the server does when you type your domainname without a pagename.

Ideally the index.php should open, if not, it will open the index.html file that redirects to your iWeb site.

Here's a test page :

    http://wyodor.byethost8.com/whatfirst/

A php file opens.

If on your server the index.html file opens, you have to add the directive to a .htaccess file as shown on the php page. If you change the order of the files in the directive, the index.html file will open.
